After our eventful trip to get to my sister's house, the week with the boys was a breeze. The kids were really very good and I had so much fun actually getting to spend time with them. We played outside a lot. Swang on the swingset, played Simon Says, freeze dance, had races, played hide and seek and went on a bug hunt (which I will be telling you about in the next post). We also made cupcakes, I made applesauce, put together puzzles, played games and did lots of Halloween crafts. Brianna and Bryce loved spending time with their cousins. While we were away, Bob spent all of his free time at work. Which is a big bummer but he had the time he needed to focus on work without feeling guilty that he wasn't spending time with us. I'll leave you with some pictures of our week, we didn't really do anything special but it was fun all the same!

the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad car ride...
I was going to just throw this in with the post about my week with 4 kids, but thought this trip deserved a post of its very own, so here it is!
The kids and I traveled to my sister's for a week to help her out and watch the boys. The trip to St. Louis started out a little rocky. I've never driven that far with the kids by myself before so I was a little nervous. I switched around my client so I could go there in the morning and hopefully get on the road early with the kids as to avoid some traffic and get to St. Louis before it got too dark. Bob and Nancy arrived to watch the kids and I left to go to work...or I tried to go to work. My car wouldn't start. Awesome way to start my day. I ended up taking their car to work. I had planned on being done with work in a couple hours so that I could be on the road by 12 or 1. Can you guess what happened? I ended up working until 2:30, then it is a 30 minute drive home. I knew I was going to be pushing it to get on the road before rush hour started, especially since after I got home Bob's dad ran out to get and install a new battery for my car. We ended up not getting on the road until about 4:15. I knew this was going to be trouble, but I didn't know how much until we started driving. It took 2 hours to get to Joliet (which if you know where we live usually takes 1 hour at most). When we finally got out of some of the traffic and construction I looked back at the kids and Bryce threw up. Awesome. So I pulled over, got him cleaned up as best as I could and got back on the road. Then Brianna had to go to the bathroom, so I figured we might as well stop and get some dinner even though we were only beginning the trip. As we got our food at McDonalds I was carrying everything and trying to make sure the kids weren't getting into anything and 2 (full) glasses of pop fell off the tray and all over the floor. I felt stupid and terrible and apologized 1000 times to the workers. We finally settled down to eat and got back on the road. Thankfully, after that the trip was very uneventful. We got to my sisters about 11:30...7+ hours after we started out, for a trip that normally takes between 5 and 5 1/2 hours. It was a long afternoon/night...but we made it. And I am happy to report the return trip home took us 5 1/2 hours and we made NO stops the entire time, the kids were angels in the car (I had to keep checking to make sure they were actually my children!)

late night wonderings...
I was just scrolling through my google reader (which I love using...but is solely the cause of me rarely leaving comments on blogs, because most of them I never have to click over to the actual blog, I can read it right from the reader screen...and yes I know that is lazy, but I do comment when I feel compelled to or just to say hi, I just don't do it as often as I should) ANYWAY...as I was scrolling through my reader I read this post and it made me think harder about something that has been bothering me a bit lately. As I've been posting all of these catch-up posts and flipping back through the blog I realized there are a handful of pictures of me. I started to wonder if all of my time behind the camera is keeping me separate from what it is I'm trying to capture. I want to remember the good times, the laughs, how little my children were...but when they look back at the pictures I've captured of their lives...of our lives, will they wonder where I am? It makes me sad to think that they may, at some point in their lives, wonder if I was present. I always put the camera down and participate in whatever we're doing, but when they look back at pictures to help trigger those memories...I'm not there. I feel strongly that it is important to capture our lives, I just wish I was able to be a part of the moment that I'm capturing. Does that make any sense? Does anyone else feel like this? Do you have a suggestion/solution, because I'm all ears!

pumpkin patch...
We headed out to the pumpkin patch with the kids again this year (it is sort of becoming a tradition and I love it). See I'm not a huge Halloween person (I know, I know). It is fun to get the kids costumes, but I don't look forward to it...they are expensive, and it is hard to find a costume that everyone can agree on...plus have you seen the girl's costumes?? They get shorter and skimpier every year...why in the world do I want my 5 year old to dress like that? Anyway, I'm not a Halloween person, I wasn't even as a kid, of course trick-or-treating was fun and I enjoyed the candy, but it just isn't my holiday. I do however love fall and all things associated with fall...the changing leaves, pumpkins, the cool air. Fall is my favorite season. All of these things make me love the pumpkin patch. This year Brian and Mary met up with us at our favorite pumpkin farm. The kids are getting old enough that they have started to love going on rides and we even went on our first hayride! We all had a great time and it was a beautiful day (although a little chillly). We were so glad that Brian and Mary came along with us!

apple picking...
On a rare weekend at home we decided to take the kids to an apple orchard and pick apples. The trip started out fun, but the kids tired of it because a lot of the apples were too high for them and we really had to search to fill up our bags with good apples. In the end though we had a fun afternoon as a family and got some great apples that I made apple crisp and applesauce out of. Besides baking bread...is there really anything better than the smell of cooking apples?

the beauty of different...
I've been reading chookooloonks pretty much since I started reading blogs. I found her through some links (as been known to happen) and I got hooked by her incredible photos and her inspiring and heartfelt words. She has recently published a book and I am so excited to check it out. Head on over to her blog and check out the giveaway she is doing. Although you will lessen my chances to win, I hope you'll participate and spread the word about this book, because sometimes we all need a reminder how beautiful different is. The new book The Beauty of Different is available from Bright Sky Press and Amazon.
emily and scott...
My friend, Emily, from high school got married on September 18th to Scott, a great guy who puts up with all of our craziness! The wedding was beautiful, and we had such a good time (although some of us drank a bit too much, but I won't mention his name). We stayed in Dubuque after the wedding so it was a great kid-free night out. There was lots of laughing, talking, drinking and dancing. Congrats Emily and Scott!! Can't wait to see you guys again!

pumpkins...
(skipping ahead to the pumpkin carving so I could post it before Halloween)We finally got a free weekend to decorate our pumpkins! We decided to paint them again this year because it is easier to let the kids loose with paint than try to supervise kids holding knives! I did carve my pumpkin, and even Bob ended up painting 2 of them. Bryce decided to paint himself in addition to the pumpkins, but we all had fun. Check out our creations!

birthdays...
We headed to IA to celebrate the birthdays of a couple of our favorite people. My good friend Jill and her daughter Mya. We went to Jumpin' Janes (an indoor inflatable play place) in Dubuque for Mya's party. The kids had a blast. At first Bob and I had to help/encourage them to try stuff, but after a while they went crazy. Bryce climbed up a big slide probably 15 times in a row...he loved it, but his little legs were so tired that he couldn't make it up the stairs the last time. It was pretty adorable to watch. We headed back to the Curry house after that for some food, cake and drinks (for the big people). It was so great to hang out with some amazingly fun people. We even broke out the board games. I LOVE board games...so having friends that love them (and are as competative as I am) is so great. We love the Currys and anytime we get to spend with them is always fun.

labor day weekend...
Bob traveled to Madison for Labor Day weekend to participate in his fanatsy football draft and play some golf with some of his Knox golfing buddies. So, that left me and the kiddos about 4 days to fill...yikes! I'm honestly not even sure what we did the whole weekend. We took a trip to the library, played and watched movies, pretty much what we do all the time. We did head up to the lake on Sunday for a while. Amanda met us there, so it was fun to hang out with her. (side note...it is a PAIN to pack up 2 kids, food, drinks, swimming gear and drive an hour by yourself...although it was totally worth it). Bob played in the Club Championship again on Sunday and Monday, so he met us up at the lake for a little bit on Sunday. Monday the kids and I went to the course to watch Bob finish up his round (I didn't think the kids could make it through the whole round quite yet). We of course got there after he finished, so we watched Papa Bob finish his last hole. And my fears were confirmed that my kids can't stay quiet on the course as we drove up to the tee box and Bryce yelled "PAPA!!" Thankfully, no one was mid-swing at the time!

knox family...
I know I've been neglecting my blog a bit and I have stuff to write about...it has just been a little crazy around here (like always). So I'm attempting to update the blog over the next few days so my faithful readers can stop complaining keep up with my beautiful family! So, when last I left you, it was the 5th anniversary of my little blog and we had just returned home from a Knox friend gathering, so I guess I'll start with that.
After church we went back and I got to play with Hayden and he told me that of all of his Knox Aunties heclearly loves me the best loves us all the exact same amount. He is such a cutie pie and gave me the baby fix I needed. After the boys returned we discussed Bryce's little accident and Chris (Dr. Miles...even though I know he hates when we call him that) gave us some pointers about what we should do, etc. After getting some pictures of the cut we decided as we were driving home to take Bryce to the doctor to see if he needed stitches. Chris graciously tolerated my text, phone calls and pictures while we were driving. Bryce ended up with 5 stitches (which most came out on their own so I'm not sure how effective they were) and now has a little scar on his forehead. It makes him look tough! :) Here is a picture with the little man and his stitches...the only picture I have from the weekend.
What a long rambling post for my first one in a couple months... I guess I could have just written this to describe this little weekend in August.
We may not be related by blood, but these girls are my family, a part of my heart and I love them all dearly.
Seeing my friends from Knox, as I have said before always calms me, no matter how stressful the planning may get (and it does get stressful at times) when we finally get together it is like I let out a breath that I didn't even know I was holding in. We had a fabulous weekend hanging out at the Miles house. As always they were the best hosts and we laughed the kind of laughter than I think can only happen among old friends, the comfortable, laugh until you cry kind of laughter. Our little group has 2 new babies on the way and at the time of our gathering one that was only 3 months old. We have grown so much. We started as a group of 6 girls and we have grown into a family of 17. It is hard to describe the weekend other than that, we ate, we laughed. In one word I was simply this....happy. (the only sad part of the weekend...I have NO pictures? What the heck?)
On Sunday, after most of the group had left it was just Bob and I with Dawn, Chris and Hayden. Chris and Bob wanted to go golfing (big surprise there) and so Dawn asked if I wanted to go to church with her. I quickly agreed and we packed up Hayden and went to church. The church was wonderful. I don't really talk about religion or faith on here, because I don't want this to be a place of tension, stress, etc. But I just want to write a bit about the service I attended. As the sermon started I thought to myself "Did Dawn know this was the sermon and she knew this is just what I needed at this moment?" (I asked her later and she said she didn't know). The Pastor (sorry if this isn't the right word here) spoke about being the vessel that God wants you to be. He is the potter and you are the clay. He shapes you in the way He wants you to be and sometimes he has to start over, and we have to be patient because everything happens in his time. I am anxious and wanting things to change in my time and to know where I'm supposed to be and what I'm supposed to, but hearing that message...calmed me. I want to be the vessel He wants me to be. Since that service I have prayed that I become that vessel and I have prayed for patience. I guess it is hard for me to sum up here maybe it is one of those things that you have to experience to understand (and obviously I'm not a great writer and cannot correctly find the right words)After church we went back and I got to play with Hayden and he told me that of all of his Knox Aunties he

too tired to celebrate...
So today marks the 5th year of my little piece of blogland. And while I feel I should write something inspiring, profound, or funny...my brain is on haitus. I have so much to write about the fantastic weekend we spent with some of my very favorite people, but it will have to wait for another day. For tonight I will just tell you that after coming home from said weekend, we had to take Mr. Bryce to urgent care and we now have our first set of stitches in the house. He was running and hit his head on the door at grandma's house. So the little man has 5 stitches in the middle of his forehead. He was very brave, but kicked and screamed during the sutures. This mama's heart broke into a million pieces. He is fine, but I think mom and grandma are going to take some time to heal! He was all smiles by the time we left Bob and Nancy's tonight, the cut doesn't bother him at all...he probably would have been perfectly happy had we just left it alone. Anyway, that is all I can write tonight, but I promise to be back soon, if I don't melt first. It is 89 degrees in our house right now...at 10:30pm! Yikes!
Happy Birthday to my little piece of the internet...the only baby book my kids will probably ever have! :)
goodnight all!
Oh by the way...Greening Sam and Avery have extended this month's camping challenge through the Labor Day weekend. So you still have time to take your kids camping and be entered to win a great giveaway. (I really want you to do this, but part of me doesn't because the stuff she is giving away is awesome and if you enter, my chances get worse...BUT, go do it anyway because it is fun and I adore Abbie!) :)

a big fail...
Today...today is a big fail. The jar thing...well, it isn't going so well. Today I endured 2+ hours of whining and crying about how she can't pick up her room and it is just too hard and she needs help. I was calm and reminded her about her jar. She asked for a snack, I calmly told her no, she didn't get a snack until her room was picked up. (This was all after she cried and screamed because she didn't like the lunch I made her...and that I wouldn't give her chocolate milk). Of course Daddy came home and her room wasn't picked up. I gave her more time, told her to get it picked up and then come say hi to Daddy, she looked like she was going to get it done. Nope. 20 minutes later it looked exactly the same. Here we are at 7:30, she is in bed for the night (a good 2 hours before she normally goes to bed) and her most prized possessions removed from her room. I did not lose my temper, I did not yell. I tried talking to her calmly and listened to her feelings, but I don't feel any closer to an answer. I feel broken. I want to cry. I want to scream. I know she is 5 and I know I expect a lot out of her, but it is nothing she isn't capable of. She is very articulate most of the time, but when I ask her why it is so hard for her and what makes it hard she can't tell me, she can't find the words. I just don't know what to do. I'm tired of the yelling, the whining, the anger and frustration that falls over my family on nights like these. I know this is all just the beginning of the battles we will face, and it seems dramatic to be sitting here crying over this, but I feel heartbroken that I can't effectively communicate with my 5 year old...how the hell are we ever going to make it through the stuff when she is 15?

the jar...
Lately we've had a bit of a problem getting Brianna to pick up her room. Now, I am of the belief that it is her room and we are not expecting it to be spotless, but you need to be able to walk on the floor and find the bed back. I don't think that is too much to ask of a 5 year old. She can destroy her room in 5 seconds but whines and complains when we tell her it is time to pick up. She says it is too hard and she needs help. Usually this goes on and on and everyone gets mad, and nothing ever changes. So I had read somewhere (I can't for the life of me remember where or I would give credit)about a family that had a jar for each of their kids. They had a list of chores and how many marbles they were worth. When a chore was completed they got to put that many marbles in their jar. When the jar was full they were offered 3 options for a prize. Now we are going to scale that down a bit. The only thing we are working on is picking up her room before Bob gets home from work and me asking her to do it no more than 2 times. We have agreed that when her jar is full we will take her to Chuck-e-Cheese. I have no idea if this will work, but it is worth a shot. I am tired of fighting with her over this. I'll keep you posted on how it goes!

linky dinky do...
It is Thursday, I am supposed to be packing, so I am doing what any good procrastinator would do, I'm blog hopping and looking at stuff on Etsy! You're welcome! :)
My sister showed me this blog the other day, and I am amazed by it! Makes me want to learn how to sew...NOW!
This was a great post that I read today. It goes along with my attempt to appreciate all the small things, but it was a great reminder.
There are some seriously creative people out there. I love looking at things on Etsy! I wish I had 1/2 the creativity of these people!
These are ridiculously adorable.
Seriously, things this cute should be outlawed.
Even though I make my own jewelry...I think this is a perfect everyday necklace.
LOVE this!
Lastly...go over to Greening Sam and Avery and comment on the guest posts this week. She is having a great giveaway. After you're done with that, read all the other posts and comment on those too!

taking on the august challenge...
Abbie over at Greening Sam and Avery has been issuing monthly challenges to her readers. Things that push them out of their comfort zones. Well August's challenge was to go camping with your kids, not in a camper or a cabin, but in a tent. We have not really ever been camping with the kids, Brianna has (sort of) slept in a tent at the Relay for Life the last couple of years, but generally that ends up with her screaming her head off in the middle of the night freaked out about being in a tent. So, while I really did want to do this, I was very afraid of what might happen! I asked my sister if she would want to "camp out" with her oldest (who is almost 5) while we were at our parents this last weekend. Mom and dad had a party for all of the people who helped them renovate their house and move last year so after we had spent all day outside at the party (complete with a bonfire) we set up the tent and camped out with the 2 older kids. Now, calling it camping might be a stretch since we really just slept in the tent, but with Brianna's track record, I thought that was a big enough step for this time around. We didn't get to bed until abotu 12:30/1am so the kids fell right asleep. It was a pretty mild night so we didn't need too many blankets. The kids had sleeping bags and were perfectly warm (Brianna slept in a nightgown). I got a little chilly in the middle of the night but it really was pretty nice. Other than my sister waking up to a spider crawling on her, the night was pretty uneventful. The kids even slept until 7:30 am (which is later than her son sleeps when he is inside)! I really want to do this again with Brianna and cook dinner oustide and really camp (even if it is only in our backyard). We'll see if we get a chance to do that anytime soon. Since we are gone every weekend it is hard to squeeze this in, but we're going to try. The August Challenge was a success in my book!

friendships...
I've been thinking a lot about friendships lately and how they change. Every year, I try to plan a gathering with the 5 girls that I lived with at Knox (and their husbands/significant others). Every year this gets a little more difficult. We became friends over 10 years ago, it amazes me to say that. These girls are such a huge part of my life and I miss them dearly. I look forward to this gathering every year. And while in the last 5 years we've never had all of us in attendance, we all do the best we can to be with each other for one weekend a year. Going back to the way friendships change...we were friends when we were just girls, going to bars, laughing for hours in each others rooms, trying to figure out where our lives were taking us and where we wanted to go and of course studying hard! And now, 10 years later we are a collection of teachers, moms, wives, girlfriends, travelers, museum workers and human resource managers, we are a successful group of women. We are all at different places in our lives, but when we're together we are those girls again. These women fill up my soul, being with them is like being home. It may be a headache to get us all together, but in those first few minutes together...I know it is all worth it. I hope they all know how much they mean to me, both individually and as a group. Love you and can't wait to see you!

relay wrap up (aka the post where i jump on my soapbox)...
Well hello there everyone! We got back home this afternoon from a fullfilling albeit exhausting weekend. Friday our relay team pumped gas at the Casey's across the street from where the Relay was being held. People were super generous and gave over $600 in the 10 hours we pumped gas. In the end, our little team (my mom, grandma, aunt, uncle and myself) raised $2300 for the American Cancer Society.
As I was walking early Saturday morning (around 3am) I was mentally writing a blog post, I thought about it all day on Saturday and for most of today, so I guess it is time to write it down. I probably should have written this earlier, but I guess as I was walking I was thinking about why I personally do this. Why I take myself out of my comfort zone and ask people to donate money and pump gas for strangers. Here is a little about why I do this.
As you know, my grandpa passed away 5 years ago in January from lung cancer. At the time of his diagnosis and subsequent tests he was told that the good news was that his cancer was slow growing and responded well to treatment. Unfortunately, it turned out that in his case neither was true, 7 weeks from the day he was diagnosed, he passed away. There is so much about this disease we just don't know, and will never know until we have the money to study it and come up with new treatments, new ways to tackle it. The speaker at the relay told her story, which included her mother dying of cancer, 14 years later this woman was diagnosed with the exact same type of cancer, Stage Four non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. She has survived the same disease that killed her mother, we have made advances in the treatment, but it can't stop, there are still too many people dying of this disease. We can't sit around and wait for "someone else" to do something about this. WE have to fight, WE have to raise money, WE have to do something. My children were robbed of their great-grandpa because of this disease, I know raising money and walking for 12 hours one night a year won't bring him back, but if I, in any small way, can help some other child have days, weeks, months, or even years with their great-grandpa then I will keep doing this every year, and I will keep asking people for money, and I will keep giving my money. I urge you all to go to a Relay if you've never been, watch the survivor lap, listen to the speaker, and stay for the luminary ceremony...I promise you it is worth it.

I urge you all to go to a Relay if you've never been, watch the survivor lap, listen to the speaker, and stay for the luminary ceremony...I promise you it is worth it.

note to self...do not travel at night...
It seems to me that traveling with small children (say 5 and 1 1/2), it would be a good idea to travel at night. They are tired, it is bedtime, cars make kids sleepy. Apparently not my kids, or I should say kid. Brianna has always been a great traveler. She slept when she was little and when she got a little older she would sleep or play with dolls or "read" books. Never a problem. Bryce on the other hand has been a horrific traveler from the start. He sleeps only about 1/2 hour to an hour on our 3 1/2 hour drive to my parents house. This wouldn't bother me except that he feels the need to scream bloody murder for the rest of the time unless being constantly entertained. Yes, we have a dvd player, and no it doesn't help. Pretty much the only way to keep him from screaming is to keep shoving fruit snacks at him. (Not a great plan, but you haven't heard that kid scream in the car). Tonight he slept about an hour and a half and then just kicked, screamed, flailed around. It was horrible. I climbed in the back to sit next to him and he hit me, didn't want to have anything to do with me. I know he is just tired and doesn't particularly like being restrained, but geesh! We spend so much time in our car and I am now dreading the next few weeks because we'll be making this trip 2 more times before August is done. Anyone have any suggestions? Besides the obvious...STAY HOME ALREADY! That isn't really an option at this point, but I am going to heed that advice in the future. I'm begging you blogland....HELP!! Now I must go try to sleep because I have to be up at the butt crack of dawn (4:45-5am) to go pump gas with our Relay team to raise some more money! If you are in or around the Dyersville area...we'll be at Casey's from 6am until 4pm. Stop in and say hi...I'll be the one with the toothpicks holding my eyelids up! :)

birthday party recap...
Saturday we had a little birthday party for Brianna with the immediate family. It was a fairly laid back party and I think everyone had fun. :) Thanks to everyone for coming and for spoiling the birthday girl. She got some much needed new clothes which she modeled for us Saturday night! She had a great time and so did we! All the pictures will be up soon, but for now here is the birthday girl with her cake!

i really looked...
The kids seemed so much bigger after a week at my mom and dad's house. As we sat in church Saturday night and Bryce was asleep in my arms, I couldn't help but just stare at him and try to memorize everything about him. How incredibly long his eyelashes are and how they curl perfectly. His little button nose (I think the one trait he got from me). His little dimple in his chin, everything about him still looks (to me) sort of like a baby. BUT, when he is awake he is all little boy and I don't see the baby anymore. I am trying my best to cherish the times that the kids will let me hold them, with both kids the times are becoming fewer and far between. A week away from my kids brought me a perspective that I didn't even know I needed. It was great to have a break and I know they had a blast, but I'm happy to have them back home and in my arms! (But ask me again tomorrow and the answer may be different! I kid, I kid!)

bathroom remodel...
While the kids were gone last week, I tackled a huge project we've been talking about for sometime, redoing our bathroom. Sunday after we got home from IA we went to Lowes and picked up all the stuff we needed. Monday was spent tearing down drywall and tile and putting up the new tub surround walls. Tuesday the drywall went up and the first coat of drywall mud went on. Wednesday second coat of drywall mud went up and Bob and I spent the rest of the night shampooing carpets and cleaning most of the house. Thursday I painted the bathroom and Friday the finishing touches went into the bathroom and the project was complete!! There is no way in the world I would have been able to complete this project in a week without my father-in-law, Bob's help. Thank you soo soo soo much!! And now without further ado...the remodel in pictures!

my whole world changed 5 years ago today...
Dear Brianna,
Wow! I cannot believe you are turning 5 today...I still think of you as that tiny baby with the little tiny chicken legs that we brought home from the hospital. I don't think I ever wrote down your birth story, so in honor of your 5 years on this earth, here is the story of your, and really our beginning.
It was a Monday night and I had just showered, that was the only way I could sleep anymore was to take a shower right before bed, I was uncomfortable and slow moving, even though I had 4 weeks to go. I laid in bed tossing and turning trying to find a way to sleep, with your daddy (of course) completely zonked out next to me. As I laid on my side trying to turn my brain off long enough to doze off I felt a little pop. Strange, but I didn't think much of it. Then I had to go to the bathroom, no surprise since I was getting up about 10 times a night anyway. When I got to the bathroom I knew my water had broke. I yelled for your daddy, he woke up startled and confused, but quickly jumped into action calling the hospital, packing our bags and putting the (uninstalled) carseat into the car. Remember you weren't supposed to be arriving for 4 weeks and we were not prepared at all. I could not stop smiling as your daddy raced around frantic. I stopped him and hugged him and said "you're going to be a daddy!". We drove to the hospital, your daddy freaking out about how we weren't ready and me bouncing up and down like a kid on Christmas morning. We finally get settled in at the hospital and I call your Grandma Susan at 1:30am to tell her we are at the hospital. She did not believe me. Not sure why she thought I'd be joking with her, but she was just as surprised as everyone else that you were going to make your entrance so soon. We settled in to wait, I wasn't having contractions so this was (most likely) going to take a while. I don't remember a ton of details between the hours of 1:30am and about 3:30pm the next afternoon. Grandma Nancy showed up at the hospital to wait for your arrival and I talked on the phone to work and your Aunt Angie during some of that time and we sat pouring over the baby books for a name, we didn't really know what your name was going to be. We had a boys name picked out but were tossing around a couple girls names, so nothing was decided for sure. Around 3:30pm it was time to push. I heard the doctor say to the nurse that I was going to be pushing for a while, I thought to myself...oh no...I am tired and I am ready to meet this baby! Daddy was such a great help, even though he was a bundle of nerves. About 30 minutes later you arrived (I found out later that you were born face up instead of face down like you were supposed to be, wanting to do things your own way from the start). The doctor said you were perfect with 10 fingers and 10 toes and then one of the nurses said "what is it, boy or girl??" Your daddy and I looked at each other and and thought...oh yeah, we don't know. The doctor said you were a girl. They asked what your name was going to be and daddy and I looked at each other and I said Paige hesitantly and daddy said "how about Brianna Paige?" the nurses let out a collective "awww" and we knew we had a winner. I called Grandma Susan and they were just outside of Cascade when you were born and then called Aunt Angie to tell her she had a niece. Grandma Nancy was the first person to meet and hold you (besides daddy and me of course). Papa Bob was at the golf course caddying for Uncle Brian, so daddy called the course and they put up a little notice on the leaderboard (we still have that). I remember calling Dawn, Alli, Marty, Jenn, Audrey, Jill and especially Amanda. When I talked to Amanda she was in the airport waiting on a flight. I told her we had a baby girl and she said "no you didn't" and I argued with her that we did in fact have a baby and didn't she hear her crying in the background? She told me she thought it was a doll! As soon as her flight landed she picked up Ben and came to the hospital to see you. There are so many other details I know I'm forgetting at this moment, but you get the idea of the day you came into the world, so many people excited and happy to meet you, but none more than me and your daddy.
At 4:11pm on Tuesday August 2nd, 2005 a 5lb 12oz baby girl changed our world. My world is immeasurably better with you in it. Thank you for making my life much more colorful and vibrant. My beautiful baby girl, I love you more than you possibly know.
Happy 5th Birthday Chicken!
Love always and forever,
mommy

relay for life...
Reposting this to remind those of you who haven't donated but still want to, or to encourage those of you who are on the fence about donating. :)
Hello blog readers! I just wanted to write a quick post to remind you all of the Relay for Life I'm participating in on August 6th. I set a goal for myself to raise $1,000 this year. Currently I am at $510, which is completely awesome and I'm so grateful for all who have donated. But, I REALLY want to hit that $1,000 mark. The American Cancer Society does such great work and is so dear to my heart, I want to do everything in my power to raise as much money as I can. So, here is my proposition for you dear blog readers...if you donate between now and August 6th, you will be entered to win a free piece of jewelry from links of love. You can customize it anyway you want if you win. Go here to donate. Thank you so much for your love and support.

a week of work...
My mom and dad are keeping the kids this week and bringing them back on Saturday in time for Brianna's birthday party. You would think relaxing would be in order for a week without kiddos, but instead we are trying to tackle some big projects. Our main project is fixing up our bathroom. We are replacing the drywall and putting up some surround walls above the tub, painting, etc. On top of that I have plans to clean carpets, and stain the deck, in addition to a massive cleaning and preparing for Brianna's party. I may not sleep a lot this week, but I hope when this week is over I have a great sense of accomplishment. Posting will be light this week...but I promise I'll be back and attempting to post more often! Have a great week everyone!

great new blog...
We are heading to Iowa today for my cousin Carl's wedding, and since I have nothing interesting going on in our lives to share...I will direct you to a website far more entertaining and smarter than mine! My friend Abbie has started this blog, Greening Sam and Avery. She has great projects that she has adapted for her young girls it is a great resource for teaching kids about the environment. Go check it out, I promise it will make you want to go out and learn more about the environment that surrounds you! Happy reading and happy weekend to you all!

a little about my little man...
Some days my little man stomps all over the last nerve I have. I know it is shocking that my children are not perfect (haha!). Being home all day every day with them has a lot of benefits, however...by the time Bob walks in the house at the end of the day I am usually done. Even if we have a fabulous day together with few fights/tantrums, etc. Usually the hour before Bob gets home they lose their shit (pardon my language). I have no idea what happens in that last hour, it is like their bodies are taken over by the devil. Does this happen to anyone else or is it just my kids? ANYWAY, it seems like I focus on too much of the "bad" so in an effort to remind myself of how adorable my little man is I just wanted to write out this post. More for me than for anyone, because someday (probably soon) this little phase will be over and I'll miss it. Bryce STILL will not say mama. What is up with that. He looks at me with a gleam in his eye and calls me dada. GRR. Lately the only way I can get him to hug/kiss me is to pretend I'm crying. I stick my bottom lip out in a pout and make crying noises. He will stop what he is doing and run over to me and hug me and give me a kiss. I usually smile at him and say "thank you". Sometimes I continue to pretend to cry. He will hug and kiss me again, and maybe a third time. But then he takes his hand and pushes my bottom lip back in, as if to say "enough mom, I know you're not really crying". This always makes me laugh. So I guess when I want to stop the insanity from now on...I'll just pretend to cry.

work in progress...
Lots of changes around here. Hope you like what I've done. Everything that was here before is still here...just in a neater fashion! I'd love to hear your thoughts on the changes. I'm not totally happy with the links of love and photo tabs, so I may be changing those, and I'm working on getting the links that are clicked on to open in a new window, it just might take me some time. I am not a webdesigner by any means, so things that would take some people a few minutes takes me hours! :)
of course...
I thought it was a good idea to start messing around with my header at midnight and of course it doesn't work the way I want. But I really need to go to bed now, so rest assured you are at "all the small things" I am just an idiot!
afternoon at the lake...
Since Bob has Fridays off this summer, we've been trying to do some family stuff on the weekends that we are home. This past Friday we decided to head up to Powers Lake to spend some time in the water and the sand. Nancy and Bob met up with us there and we had a fun, relaxing afternoon. Brianna and I spent some time finding pretty rocks and looking at snail shells. We found a shell with a snail still inside and we looked at it for a little bit and then put it back in the water. Hopefully we didn't disturb him too much. We also just floated for a little while in the water, talking and laughing...it was a great family day! (photos taken and shared with me by Nancy!)

a craft semi-success...
Brianna and I were making a trip to Michaels, I was getting a few things to put the finishing touches on some things I was working on (I will post details at a later date, as they are sort-of gifts) and she wanted to make something with me. So we looked around and found some flip-flops that we could decorate. Perfect craft for my little shoe lover! We started off and I realized the little string they had to hold the flower onto the flip-flop wasn't going to work very well. I decided to try hot glue. Well...that apparently doesn't work very well either, because the flowers were off in a matter of hours. Oh well, she still wears the flip-flops and they looked cute for a little while! We had fun making them together so that, in my book, makes it a semi-success! :)

fourth of july...
After the wedding we headed to Wentzville to pick up the kids and spend the 4th of July with my sister and her family. Bob and I were a little slow all day and definitely still recovering from the wedding. We had a great time with Angie, Nick, the boys and Nick's family though and the food was as good as the company. On the downside, the kids slept horribly Sunday night. Both Brianna and Bryce were up until after 1am and even then both fell asleep on the couch, while I was attempting to sleep in the recliner. At 3am I decided to put Bryce in the pack-n-play so I could lay on the couch and ran into Angie and Nick's coffee table. Pretty sure I broke a toe (really not exaggerating). Oh well, it happens I guess. Monday Angie and I did manage to sneak away to go see Eclipse. We both liked it, but I think we were both too tired to really enjoy it! :) After the movie we headed home and headed back to reality. (Bryce was sleeping during the following pictures...I wasn't playing favorites with my kids!)

vince and shelley...
Our friend from Knox, Vince, got married on July 3rd to a wonderful girl named Shelley. Bob had the honor of being a groomsman in the wedding, so we headed down to Champaign on Thursday for a long weekend of fun. Angie and Nick kept the 2 kids so on Friday while Bob was off playing golf (where he shot a 68 by the way...30 on the front 9...he was on cloud 9) I drove 1/2 way to Wentzville, MO for a kid drop off. Friday night was the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner and we had so much fun hanging out with our Knox friends that were there...we even played a couple of games of caps in the hotel. (If you have never been to Knox or gone to school there or have a friend who went there...you will have no idea what this game is, but trust me it is one of the best games ever invented!). Saturday I had the luxury of laying in bed, reading, taking a nap, etc. I seriously did not leave the hotel room until I left for the wedding. Bob even brought me breakfast and lunch...heck I don't know if I even got out of bed until I got up to get ready! It was heaven. That is definitely not a luxury I have much of these days! The wedding was beautiful as was the reception. It was a beautiful day and they are such a great couple and we are so happy to get the pleasure of watching our friends get married. Especially those who were there with us the day we got married. Bob and I certainly enjoyed our kid free night and dance and laughed the night away with old friends. Congratulations Vince and Shelley!
